McFly is a pop group based in the United Kingdom The band members are Danny Jones (born March 12, 1986), Dougie Poynter (born November 30, 1987), Tom Fletcher (born July 17, 1985) and Harry Judd (born December 23, 1985). McFly are often described as "mates with Busted" (Harry Judd and Charlie Simpson from Busted went to the same school, Uppingham), a male guitar band with a similar slightly rockier edge than more well-known boy bands such as Westlife.

In spite of this modern "boy band" and "pop" image and reputation, a lot of McFly's songs have the feeling of a good fun pop band, accentuated by the presence of all members of a typical four-piece rock band (unlike Busted, this includes a full time drummer). There are also a lot of evident influences from such popular classic (rather than modern) pop bands as The Beach Boys and The Beatles, and more recently Bruce Springsteen and The Who. Critics have labelled McFly music as "Nu-Pop". However the band are less hasty to shrug off the 'boyband' title that the critics feel they resent, as when they recently met Roger Daltry of The Who he informed them that "at the start, we [The Who] were a boyband too."

McFly are signed to the Island Records label and are managed by Prestige Management. Their first single, "5 Colours In Her Hair" entered the UK singles chart at number one in April 2004 and stayed there for two weeks. In July 2004 their second single, "Obviously", also reached the top, but only for one week. This was followed by the album "Room On The 3rd Floor" debuting at number one in the UK albums chart. The album broke records as they were the youngest band since the Beatles to have a debut album go straight to #1.

The third single, "That Girl", was released on September 6, 2004 and lost out in a very close battle for the top spot with Brian McFadden's "Real To Me". It went to #3, despite topping midweek sales charts. The fourth single, "Room On The Third Floor" (the album's title track), was released on November 15, 2004 and made #5.

In March 2005, McFly released "All About You/You've Got A Friend", the first single from their 2nd album, which features a 60-piece Orchestra. The single reached #1 for a week on 13 March, and the profits from the single were donated to Comic Relief. The video for You've got a friend was shot in Uganda, which McFly visited for Comic Relief

The band starred in an episode of the hit British drama series Casualty. They are due to star in a film with Lindsay Lohan called Just My Luck, coming out in April 2006.

They are now promoting for their second album, and have recently completed their second tour. A UK arena tour. The second single from "Wonderland", "I'll Be Okay" was released in the UK on the 15th August and scored them their 4th UK Number 1. Their second album "Wonderland" was released on the 29 August, 2005, debuting at #1.

The third single from "Wonderland" is "I wanna hold you". It was released on 17th October 2005 and scored them their sixth top 3 single, missing out on number one to the Arctic Monkeys.

McFly were winners of Best Pop Act at the 2005 Brit Awards.

Controversy

Many fans of punk rock are annoyed at the likes of McFly because they play guitars and drums, but sing with trademark boyband lyrics, which have a far lighter tone than bands like Green Day , Good Charlotte, etc. However, the members have been playing instruments and writing songs for several years, so any implication that the instruments were used as a marketing ploy to make them more 'real' are deeply cynical.
