MTV3 is a Finnish commercial television station owned by Bonnier and Proventus, and currently has the biggest audience share of all Finnish TV channels. The letters MTV stand for Mainos-TV (commercial TV), due to the channel being the first privately owned in Finland (and thus getting it's revenue from running commercials). Number 3 was later added, because it was the third nation-wide television channel and generally known as "the third channel", Finnish Broadcasting Company's YLE TV1 and YLE TV2 being the first two. The symbol of the channel is a stylished owl, changed to an owl's eye after an image renewal in 2003.

History

MTV3 started on August 13 1957, and thus became the third-oldest privately owned commercial TV station in Europe. It started as just plain MTV as bits of programmes in a channel broadcast. MTV started to have a proper channel when, in 1986, Kolmoskanava (TV3) was born as a joint venture between YLE, MTV, and Nokia. MTV3 was born in 1993 when MTV took over the shares of TV3 from YLE and Nokia. Alma Media sold MTV3 and its sister channels (MTV3+, Subtv, Urheilukanava, Radio Nova) to Swedish Bonnier and Proventus in 2005.

Programmes

Much of the output of MTV3 is a mixture of Finnish versions of popular programmes and of American imports such as:
