Solve for x: $x^2-x-6=0\,$

First we factor the left hand side.

$(x-3)(x+2)=0\,$

Since we have the product of two factors equal to zero, it follows that at least one of the factors must be zero.

Solving, we get:

$x=3\,\,\, {\rm or} \,\,\, x=-2\,$
