Solve for x: x^2-x-6=0\,

First we factor the left hand side.

(x-3)(x+2)=0\,

Since we have the product of two factors equal to zero, it follows that at least one of the factors must be zero.

x-3=0\,\,\, {\rm or} \,\,\, x+2=0\,

Solving, we get:

 x=3\,\,\, {\rm or} \,\,\, x=-2\,
