- Ottawa Silver Seven win their 4th Stanley Cup, defeating Smiths Falls 2 games to 0. Later in the season, the Montreal Wanderers won their 1st championship, defeating the Silver Seven 2 games to 1.
- March 31 - The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) is established to set rules for amateur sports in the United States. The IAAUS would later become the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1910.
- May 22 - The 1906 Summer Olympics, now not recognized as an Olympic Games, opens in Athens.
